Stormforce 10

By Paul Bullock

22nd January 2012

It was an early start with a full ‘Georgina’s Beer Bus’, and a misunderstanding with the first pick-up set me back 10 minutes, but all ended up well, and we arrived at the race venue in good time.

Perfect running conditions in St Austell turned to heavy rain on route to Camborne, but the rain lifted, giving good running conditions for the start, despite the strong winds encountered in places around the course.

Registration was busy with a record number for the race with 545 finishers, of which there were 63 club entries, which is a pretty impressive number for a 10 miler.

Amongst those doing their first 10 miler, and club debutants were : Will Hancock, Hilary Nicholas, Becky James, Nic Hoar, Julia Nadaud, Charlotte and Darren McColl and Lisa Moore, and what cracking performances they all had.

A welcome return to club racing for Trish Jones and Marilyn Mitchell, both having good runs.

The race was won with another strong performance from our in-form Dan Alsop, with a PB to boot, and he was backed up by Duncan Oakes, Stuart Nicholas, Stephen Hands, Jamie Youlden and Tim Adams, for the 3rd team. They were just 2 points (positions) from 2nd!

The ladies team, who have not really featured in the past, put out a strong looking team and got their rewards, with an excellent 3rd place. Well Done to Kayleigh Newstead, Emma Murray, Sarah Bailey, Deb Grills, Liz Lusty and Shirley Cairney. The 6 for a ladies team should help this year.

Top efforts from both teams and let’s hope the captains’ pairing of Rachel and Helen can keep the impetus going for the ladies throughout the season.

Individual category prizes went to Emma Murray (FV45 3rd), Lisa Player (FV50 3rd) and Marilyn Mitchell sealing her fine return with 1st FV65.

For the men, Dan was overall winner and 1st MU40, Stephen Hands (MV40 3rd) and Doug Alsop (MV65 2nd).

Georgina’s BB stopped for a little liquid refreshment at the County Arms on the way back and a good day was had by all.

What fantastic efforts, with lots of Personal Bests recorded, including : Katie Bullock, Georgina Speake, Sarah Bailey, Rachel Builder, Melissa Moriarty, Daniella Walker, Marie Blackbeard, Michelle Frank, Emma Watkins, Deb Grills, Dan Alsop, Stuart Nicholas, Steve Martin, Shawn Ferris, Matt Grose, Duncan Oakes, Garry Player, James Asser, Andy Trudgian, Glynn Chillingworth, Steve Covus, Phil Lean and Reg Eden. (thanks for the STATS, Doug).

Thanks to Terry for the hundreds of photos as usual, and the customary support on route.

The ‘Lightweight Award’ of 2012 so far must go to Andy Budge, who after committing to run all 15 GP’s this year, pulled out at the first hurdle, preferring a skin full of beer on Saturday night, and pulling out before the race, with a hangover.

Let’s keep the ball rolling for the forthcoming races and continue the ‘feel – good’ factor with the club and clubnights at present.................what a club we have!!
