Treggy 7

By Patrick Talen

2nd September

Its was an earlier than usual start to a race that almost caught out some of our runners and a few missed Terry’s 9.30am photo call. With the pictures in the bag the STARC runners started to fire themselves up for the race. The conditions were almost perfect for running with overcast skies and a light drizzle but a slight warm temperature. With all the runners gathered at the start line and after a small briefing we were under starters orders and set on our way.
A fast down hill start which is what caught me out last year was followed by a very nice stretch of flat running before the dreaded HILL of DOOM which is about 2 and a bit miles in and has claimed many a good runner in previous years. This is where the strategy came in to play and by walking all the way up the hill I was soon catching and overtaking all the people that had decided to make their accent by running up the hill/mountain. With runners legs clearly turning to jelly and a lot of people looking tired I trotted passed felling very smug and still full of running as I had made the same mistake of trying to run it last year with the same end result. After a few more miles on the flat it was back into Launceston and after a few more twists and turns and one last sharp nip of a hill it was up into the castle and across the finishing line.
There where many runners achieving Personal Best times including Me!!! which I was well chuffed with and celebrated with a few of the STARC gang at the Harbourside.
Stuart Nicholas was the 1st man home for the club in a time of 41.54 followed in by Laurie Lee, Malcolm Roberts, Tom Howell who as I understand has clocked up his 500 miles for the club so well done Tom, Tim Adams and Peter Bazin. The guys came in as the 7th Male team.
The ladies also had a fair few PB times and solid performances the team consisting of Deb Grills
Lisa Jones, Marie Blackbeard, Sue Mellis, Rachel Waters & Katie ‘the training is paying off’ Bullock came in as 4th ladies team.

Cornwall AC continue to produce impressive performances with Emma Steptoe breaking the course record for a female runner so our ladies can be proud of the effort they put in.
The race was superbly organised and well marshalled by Launceston Road Runners who provided all runners with a generously stocked goody bag including a Treggy 7 mug which I am sipping tea out of as I am writing this report.
Well done to all who raced for the club, and to those who achieved PB times in this race or over the 7 mile distance. Below is the list kindly provided to me by Doug Alsop.
