Westward League XC Bovey Tracey

By Tom Howell

12th February 2012

Bovey Tracey is the 5th instalment of the Westward League series covering Cornwall and Devon. With the men's race not starting until 1:40, it gave us a more leisurely morning than the usual early road race starts. We assembled outside Andy's shop at 10 for a car share with the two Dave's, Duncan, Andy and myself. It was understood that Dan and Doug were also heading up which would give us our best starc turnout to date.

On arrival to the course, the big question was whether to wear spikes or trails because it was much drier than the previous year. I went for trails which concerned me when the vast majority were wearing spikes when we lined up at the start! Hey ho, there's know going back now! We had to do a small loop at the start and then it was 3 laps through woodland and fields.

Apart from when tackling the one steep climb, my choice of footwear was a good one. I jostled with Dave Rowe up until the midway point where he was too strong on the hill. In the final minute of the race, I found myself running with Cornwall AC's Justin Day and our Andy Trudgian so I knew that I was was having a decent race.

The race was won by Newquay/Par athlete Kevin Toher, with Tavistock's Jim Cole in close attendance and Dan Alsop continuing his fine form taking 3rd spot. Next in for us was Duncan in 38th, Dave R 44th, Andy 48th, Tom 50th, Doug 67th and Dave S 77th. There were 105 finishers and hopefully we can get a team for the final meet at Plymouth next month.
