Runway Runaround, RAF St Mawgan

By Angela Yates

25th Mar 2013

On a bitterly cold morning, several STARCers turned up at RAF ST Mawgan for the Charity 10k, in aid of the Cornwall Air Ambulance. It was advertised as a 'flat and furious' 10k; there was a 4k as well. I was looking for a race to make my 'comeback', and this fitted the bill.

Blimey, was it cold! After an areobics style warm up, we made our way to the start line...only to be kept waiting for a few minutes, by which time we were all cold again! Having said that, it was a well organised, well marshalled race, with good sineage to the race and on the course Some of the marshalls could have been more encouraging, but then, there are no finer marshalls in Cornwall, (or the country??) than STARC.

STARC runners were: Andy Trudgian, (1st home for STARC he tells me,) Andrew Lucas, Derran Blewett, Sarah from Carlyon Bay, (sorry, can't remember your surname) and me. (anyone I didn't spot, apologies for missing you).

The race was a sort of figure of 8, along disused runways, around obsolete WWII type hangers etc and passed some slightly scary signs: 'heightened' level of awareness! But then some light relief: a sign saying 'short cut to the Barber's' !! and even a bandstand!! One male runner took 'STARCers' to an extreme: flesh coloured shorts, a 'mankini' but no other clothing, apart from his socks and trainers! He must have been hoping for a trip in the Air Ambulance to Treliske, probably suffering from hypothermia!

I hope all had a good run, I certainly did.

I'd recommend the Runaround: good Cornish charity, mascots, 'Charity Village', complete with fancy dress stall!, massages, raffle, home made cakes, samba band, Pirate FM, a T shirt, goody bag, medal, pasty and a pint of Doom Bar!

Highlights for me?? First race 'back', I wasn't last, the Marshall who looked me straight in the eye and said 'no 138 you are looking awesome'! ( I wasn't, but it was well meant!) And the 2 former members of STARC who came back on the course to offer me encouragement and ask if I wanted company to finish the race! Thank you.

Would I do it again? YES!
